Yesterday I had the opportunity to leave my job early so I did what's becoming more normal for me when I have days and/or afternoons off, I took my dog, Lady, for a walk in one of the local parks. Started off pretty normal. The past few days there was a major heat wave that came though that brought incredibly high humidity and made any outdoor activity almost unbearable. Yesterday, though, was a balmy 89 degrees (and the best part was, no humidity)!
I started off a little dehydrated so I didn't really think anything of the fact that my legs felt tired more quickly than they had before. That and my trainer had worked out my legs pretty hard the day before too! The pace felt slower than the previous walks, but still pretty good. During the walk, I found that my dog is less afraid of people than she used to be, but she's now terrified of other dogs, which is a new development for her. I need to get her out and socialize her more, I think.
When I got home I was pleasantly surprised. Ever since doing marching band in high school I've always gauged my workouts by how sweaty my shirt was afterwards. If there are no wet spots, even if I feel really tired and worn out, I don't feel very accomplished, but if my shirt has wet spots, and especially if more than 50% of it is wet, I feel like I did a really good job! I changed my clothes at home and my shirt was really REALLY wet! During the walk, my heart rate was significantly higher than my resting/average heart rate, but I wasn't really "out of breath" at any point, and my legs weren't burning as much as they usually do, or really much at all, so I didn't think I was actually getting much quality cardio time in.
But I guess I was!
Today, when I was getting ready for work, and even during the day, my legs felt very tired, and pretty stiff. That tells me that I did get in a good quality workout yesterday, but I guess I could be wrong. The optimist that is somewhere deep inside me wants to say that I'm starting to get healthier and able to do more physically, without having to exert as much effort. I've noticed a change in my diet and metabolism too. Now, keep in mind, I've been working on these changes for much longer than this blog as been in existence, but still, the change is there!
I still have a huge love for junk-food, and that is something that I will likely have to deal with my entire life. I just need to develop a discipline to eat less junk food, and more not-junk food. I've been eating smaller portions of junk-food, and more healthy(er) foods. My metabolism is getting faster, but also getting more unpredictable. Hopefully it will get more predictable soon so I don't realize that I'm starving at a point in the day where the next opportunity to eat is two hours away!
Maybe I'm deluding myself here, but I do think that the changes I'm seeing are positive and indicative that I'm taking baby steps in the right direction!
